We had a great time climbing down in Red Rocks with Tim and Ron. Here are a few photos. The weather was great. We did yoga, and climbed some fun routes. Looking forward to heading there again next year!

Carstensz Pyramid (16,024 ft, 4,884 m) is the highest peak in the oceanic continent and one of the seven summits. This expedition in West Papua a providence of Indonesia, is possible the most exotic of the seven summits, and a unforgettable adventure even for those not seeking the seven summits. It is located on the island of New Guinea, and is the highest peak between the Himalayas and the Andes, as well as, the highest island peak in the world. This peak was first climbed in 1926 on an expedition led by Heinrich Harrer an Austrian mountaineer.

We begin this trip in Bali, Indonesia a fun place to relax and celebrate on its beautiful beaches. From Bali, we take a commercial flight to Timeka on the West Papuan Island followed by a flight on a twin Otter to Pinapa. Here we will enjoy an evening in the chiefs house and meet our local porters from the Dani tribe for the trip. Some of which still wear the traditional penis gourds. (see photo)

The next five days are spent trekking in through the jungle most of which is above 10,000ft with unique and incredible scenery. On day five we arrive at our base camp situated by a high mountain lake and the 4000ft limestone walls.

Our route ascends the limestone face with the crux moves at 5.6 rock climbing up to the ridge where we will traverse the ridge, using a Tyrollean traverse on a fixed cable at one point, then continuing on snow and mixed terrain to the summit.

From the summit we can see the Freeport mine one of the world’s largest producers of gold and copper with private roads reaching very near. Though these roads are off limits to all but those who work there.

The morning after our summit we retrace our tracks back to Pinapa, continuing to Bali the next morning.

The Trilogy

Of all the classic Alps trips that we have been asked about it is the trilogy of Mt Blanc, the Matterhorn and the Eiger. Three great peaks steeped in history and mountaineering fascination. A dream of many an Alpinist to challenge oneself upon each of these peaks in ones lifetime and a great achievement to have at least tried let alone stand upon all three summits.

If one is ready and the weather and conditions are favorable we have many times been able to climb all three in a ten day period including acclimatization and traveling. It has been done and will be done again but giving a few extra days for weather and rest certainly ups the chances of success and so we feel that a full 13 day trip will give you the best chance possible to complete this audacious trilogy.

Time is precious, think about what you want to do and ask us for any advise. This will truly be an outstanding feather in the cap of any alpinist.

Tetons 2012

Todd and Winslow will be back in the Tetons next summer as it is so nice up there. There are many fun climbing adventures! The Grand Teton is a must if you have not done that one, and if you have I will mention a few other good ones such as Irene's arete or Open book on Disappointment Peak, Symmetry Spire, and Mt. Moran - CMC route, a fun two day adventure.

I was happy to be home after nearly 2 months away in Africa and Europe, but my rest was short lived. Winslow had made plans for us to head to the Teton's for one last Grand trip. I was game..I love the Tetons and I would have been climbing around here anyways...so why not go make a few more bucks!

We had a great group of guys, three friends for New York: Steve, Larry and Bruce. They kept telling us that the climbing was way more difficult than they had anticipated..But they all did great! We braved the wind and summitted just after 8 a.m. We really enjoyed our Bonus trip on the Grand Teton!!

October - Yoga and Rock Climbing in Red Rocks Canyon, NV This is a 3 day event that combines yoga and rock climbing. No experience necessary. The climbing here is really amazing. It is only 25 minutes outside of Las Vegas.

Nov. - Jan - Todd, Winslow and Tim will all be down in Antarctica. If you wnat to climb Winson Massif, learn to kite ski, or take a trip to the south pole for the hundred year anniversary of explorers reaching the pole, then let us know!

Feb - Mar. - Utah Powder Sking is rad! Winslow and Todd guide backcountry ski tours and teach avalanche courses. Tim will be in La Grave, France which is amazing steep skiing.

March 14th-16th - Winslow is leading a 3 day yoga and basckcountry skiing retreat at the Alta Lodge! This will be the 3rd year. You will love this one! You need to be a good skier able to ski intermediate to advanced runs off piste at the resort. No backcountry or yoga experience required. Yoga is optional!

March 18th- 30th Carstensz Pyramid. Winslow and Todd are leading a trip together. Todd had a sucessful trip last year, and is set to go again. This is one of the 7 summits, but not easy to get to . It involes a 5 day trek through West Papua to reach the mountain. It is a long alpine rock climb rated at 5.6. We are off the beaten path. The climbing is super fun and beautiful!

April - Haute Route Ski Tour in the Alps from Chamonix to Zermatt. This is an 8 day adventure through the stunning Alps range with great skiing and evenign lodging in the high European huts. Exact dates to be determined. Please inquire soon with your request.

May - 12 day adventure in the Ruth Gorge, Alaska Range. Space for 1-2 more only!!! This is 7 nights lodging at the mountain house in the Ruth Gorge ampitheather, and 5 nights in the middle we will fly to another area for skiing, alpine climbing, and/or rock climbing! Sign up soon!!!!

This summer has been a busy one for all three of us here at In The Company of Guides. l (Todd Passey) promised one of my clients (Larry) that I would put some stuff on the blog, and am only now finding a few moments to do so.

I guess I will begin with Alaska. I began my Alaska season in May with a trip into the Ruth Gorge with Mike. We spent a week camping near the mountain house and ski touring all around the Gorge.

We had such a great time than within a few minutes of returning to Talkeetna, Mike book 14 days for 2012. If anyone wants to join us we have the Mt. House for 7 days and then we plan to get a bump in a plane to go try the Mooses Tooth or Mt. Huntington.

After the Ruth Gorge trip I lead 2 seperate Denali trips. These were my 16th and 17th trips on Denali and both were successful as far as summit, fun and safety.

I went home to Salt Lake City for a couple of days and then headed to Jackson Hole, WY to guide a couple of trips on the Grand. It is an awsome scene up there, great mountain, great community and fun guiding! I can't seem to locate my photos from the Teton's. Both trips reached the summit...The first via the complete Exum Ridge, and the second via the upper Exum ridge.

Straight from the summit, Winslow and I loaded up the car and headed for home..We wanted to stay and celebrate with Larry and the So. Cal. boys, but I needed to catch a plane to Nirobi the following mourning.

This was my first trip to Africa, and I will definitely be back. I was really impressed with the people, the landscape and the Climbing! Lillian and I climbed Mt. Kenya's highest peak Batian by way of the North Standard route. This route is a 5.8 20+ pitch route, and we were the first team to summit this year (not that others were'nt trying..nearly a dozen did try while we were there).

on to the Alps! I began with a trip called 10 Trilogy where we attempt to climb Mount Blanc, The Matterhorn and The Eiger. Poor weather happered us during the first week, but we kept at it and were rewarded with two summits; Mount Blanc and The Matterhorn.

I just came by this video I made a while back. We had a great day of powder skiing south facing Aspen trees! It was a higher avalanche day, and we set off a big slide remotely from the south side of the ridge. The whole north facing slope went. There is some good dancing here too!

This is a 12 day journey with 7 days at the Mountain House hut in the Ruth Gorge Ampetheatre, and 5 days in the middle we will get a bump to a different spot such as to Little Swizterland, the root canal below the Mooses Tooth, or over to Mt. Huntington. This area is completely astonishing with rock walls that rise up 5000' above the glacier ice. There are options for skiing, rock climbing, alpine climbing, and steep snow climbs and long glacier treks. We can take 2-3 more people! We will spend 3 days camping in the beautiful desert landscape of Red Rocks Canyon climbing and doing yoga daily. Uniting yoga and rock climbing in this serene setting is an adventure not to be missed. There will be instruction in climbing techniques and skills such as belaying, rappelling, building anchors, self rescue and multi-pitch climbing. We will enjoy yoga and use the principles of breathing and alignment practiced on the mat to enhance and improve our rock climbing skills.

This trip is created and lead by Winslow Passey. Winslow has been guiding for 11 years, and has found yoga to be an integral part of staying healthy and strong in the mountains, and she is passionate about sharing yoga and rock climbing with others. Winslow is a fully certified Ski Mountaineering guide and has completed the first of the Rock and Alpine courses.

Winslow is a certified Yoga Instructor through Satpa Yoga 200hr Teacher Training Course under the direct supervision of the renown yogi Dr. Sushil Bhattacharya, founder/director of Sapta Yoga International, Kathmandu, Nepal. Winslow has also practiced in Anusara yoga participating this spring in the 200hr Teacher Immersion training in Salt Lake City from Adam Ballinger at Kula Studio. This year Winslow is contining her Anusara Yoga training doing the level 1,2, and 3 teacher trainings.

Yoga is a powerful practice that enhances every aspect of our lives physically and mentally. Yoga means “yoke” or to “unite” the body, mind and spirit in a way that brings us strength and calmness. The strength supports us in all of our daily activities bringing greater ease and enjoyment in life. Increasing ones flexibility helps prevent injury and allows for a freedom of movement that is very helpful in rock climbing. Did I tell you how amazing the Wind River Range is for climbing, camping, fishing and yoga! Yeah! It's phenonminal! I did two trips last summer and loved it so much I can't wait to go back! It is a 10 mi. hike into the Cirque of Towers where you can settle in with the high mountain lakes and wildflowers surrounded by towering granite peaks! The climbing is exhilerating and fun, with a variety of different climbing objectives for all levels. It is nice to hire a porter and spend 4 nights or so playing and climbing out there. If you have someone who is not a climber, they would also love the hiking and scenery in there. From our camp it is a short approach to the climbs.

Cost: $1750.00 Includes price of porter, food and camping (rate based on 2 people), does not include rental car fee!

Schedule:

Day 0: Arrive in Salt Lake, drive to the trailhead

Depending on the time of arrival, we will make the 5hr. drive to the trailhead this evening.

Day 1:

Hike into the Cirque of the Towers. It is about a 6hr hike into camp passing many lakes and streams along the way. (10mi, 6km)

Day 2-4:

We will climb peaks such as Pingora, Wolf’s head, Overhanging tower, and Shark’s nose depending on the weather and individual desires! Lots of great granite peaks to keep us entertained! The fishing is also really good, and yoga in the wildflowers is fun too!

Day 5:

Hike out (3.5-4.5hr), and drive back to Salt Lake City.

Day 6:

Fly home or enjoy a day in Salt Lake touring around or rock climbing in the Wasatch!

Nepal trek Spring 2011!!!!

Come trek in the beautiful Himalayas from Lukla to Everest Base Camp (17,600'), and Kala Patar (18,300'). This is a journey not to be missed! We begin by hiking through the lush rainforest of the lower Khumbu valley, and continue up above treeline into the high Himalayas. The trek is on trails all the way, we utilize local porters or yaks to transport our gear, and stay in lodges. Experiencing the rich culture of the Nepali people is a highlight of the trip.

I have been to Nepal now 8 times in this region, and I am more and more moved each time. It is a trip of a lifetime that lifts the heart and soul. We will spend several days in Kathmandu visiting some of the special places there such as Pashupatinath (the Hindu temple), Swayambhunath (the Buddhist "monkey" temple), and Bodnath (a Tibetian Buddhist stupa).

We will then fly to Lukla (9000') and begin the trek from there. You will need to be in good physical condition able to hike 3000' and 5mi. a day. We will take a slow pace to acclimatize.

Day 1 & 2 - Fly to Kathmandu

Day 3 - Tour in Kathmandu

Day 4 - Fly to Lukla (9000') and trek to Phakding (8700' 3-4hr)

Day 5 - Trek to Namche Bazaar (11,300' 5-6hr). This is the central trade center for goods from Tibet!

Day 6 - Rest day in Namche Bazaar

Day 7 - Khumjung (12,500' 3-4hr), visit the Hillary School and the Hospital

Day 8 - Trek to Tengboche, visit the monastary, gift shop, & bakery (12,660' 4-5hr) There are great views of Ama Dablam from here, descend slightly to Deboche (in the Rhodendron forest) for the night

Day 9 - Trek to Pheriche (14,000' 6-7hr) , We will visit the Himalayan Rescue Association for a high altitude talk!

Day 10 - Day hike from Pheriche

Day 11 - Trek to Lobuche (16,200' 6-7hr)

Day 12 - Trek to Gorak Shep (16,961' 6-7hr), afternoon hike up Kala Patar (18,200' 3-4hr) weather permiting

Day 13 - Trek to Everest Base Camp (17,600' 8-9hr) and back to Gorak Shep

Day 14 - Descend to Dingboche (13,900' 5-6hr)

Day 15 - Descend to Tengboche (12,600' 5-6hr)

Day 16 - Descend to Namche (11,300' 5-6hr)

Day 17 - Descend to Lukla (9000' 5-6hr)

Day 18 - Fly to Kathmandu

Day 19 & 20 - Fly home

COST INCLUDE:

All meal during the trek, hotel accommodation in standard hotel at Kathmandu in bed and breakfast at the Yak n Yeti & en-route trek, a trekking guide, cook, kitchen helper, porters for carrying all loads during the trek. Spring skiing in La Grave, France!!! We had such a fun trip. The skiing there is steep, and you often have to wear a harness for mid route rappels. We carried crampons and ice ax daily to get up to some of the fun skiiing. It is an adventure not to be missed!

If you enjoyed the short version, and you want to get a little more of the story, then check this out too! Even this version has been shortened down from the original 45min. length. It is hard to put 3 months of adventure into a short flick, but I have done my best! Thanks for watching!

Here is a summary of the three months:

I flew down to Punta Areanas on November first. It was a long journey from Salt Lake (37hr travel time). We then were delayed for 3 weeks waiting to fly onto the ice. We kept busy with projects in town, going to the climbing gym, and getting to know each other. There were a crew of people that had flown in early to Union Glacier on the Twin Otters and the Basler who were on the ice in some crazy storms. They still manage to get a lot of things set up and cleared the runway for the Illyushian. I flew in on the second flight on Nov. 25th. It was absolutely stunning when we landed on the Union Glacier. There are mountains in every direction, and inspration was easy to find.

The next day I flew to Vinson Base Camp with some other guides to set up camp there and start to prepare the mountain. We only had a few days to get set up before the first Vinson climbers arrived. It was a team effort for sure. A few guides went up and put up the fixed lines, a few others went up and set up the camps, and Pachi and I started right in with our first groups.

My group was Guiseppe from Itay, Eric from Poland, and Francios from Canada. They were great, and we had a super fun trip. We climbed on the first day from Base camp to the top of Ski Hill. From here we had amazing views of Epperly and Mt. Shin.

The next day we went to Low camp. From Low camp we did an acclimitization day and took a day hike to the col where we were looking at the face of Epperley, and down onto the Pyramid shaped Shcultz peak!

Then we climbed up the fixed lines to High camp. It is a long day getting up there. We were glad to have Rob and Simon helping us set up tents. The winds were already picking up as a storm was approaching. We spent the next 5 days waiting out a storm. The winds were blowing up to 60 at times with an average temperature of -20C. We hunkered down! When we ran out of hot chocolate, we were glad there were enough chocolate bars up there to make some homemade hot chocolate.

When the sotrm passed we had a beautiful and warm summit day, until we reached the summit ridge where the winds were blowing 20-30mph. It was cold up there and every bit of skin had to be covered!

I did a ranger patrol with Pachi on the mountain, and then we went to Union Glacier for awhile. We marked many routes with bamboo poles, climbed a few routes on Mt. Rossman, did a little kite skiing, and enjoyed a festive Christmas at Union Glacier.

On New Year's Eve, I flew to the 89th parrallel to ski the last degree to the South Pole with the Chinese group. Average temperature here was -25C with a 3-5 knot wind. It took us 7 days to complete the journey. It was an interesting experience to get dropped off in the middle of nowhere on this large white expanse. Near the south pole it is a large glacier plateau that is mostly flat. We could see only white in all directions to the the horizon. Without a compass and GPS, it would be impossible to walk in a straight line. Imagine the South pole in the summer is pointed at the sun, so as the earth spins, the sun just moves around you in a circle. It became very apparent to me how fast the earth is spinning, as my shadow visible spun around me. I thought, hear I am trying to walk in a straight line when the earth is spinning so fast.

We settled into a pace of hiking for 2 hr and taking a 25min. break. It was too cold to stop for long. We had our Hileberg tent ready to pop up with the poles taped together when we got to camp we could set up in about 20min. Once in the tent it was quite warm because the sun was always shinning and would warm it up quickly. We wore face mask most of the time, and cruised along on our cross country skis pulling sleds in tow. It was a great opportunity to be alone with your mind. I thought about all my family and friends. It occured to me how I choose my attitude at any moment in time. When at times I would get frustrated with my sled, or my back would hurt, I would then realized that it was all an opportunity. So I learmed our to walk better using my core and not my back, I appreciated the hard work and began to enjoy this unique opportunity.

The group did great and got up to doing about 20 km a day. We were elated to arrive at the South Pole. However it was not in our cards to leave right away, and we spent 4 days there waiting for the weather to cooperate for a plane to get in to pick us up! Another opportunity, and a great time to catch up on our sleep. We were not alone. An owner of ALE, a guide, and one client had opted to spend one night at the pole as well. That one night turned into 4! You never know what may happen. So we have lots of photos from the south pole!

We did finally make it back to Union Glacier, but again there were delays of weather, a fuel strike in Punta Areanas, and a broken fuel pump on the plane that had to be flown from Russia! So we played ping pong, volley ball, went for hikes, did yoga, and had an Olympic competition. Always an adventure. Now mater what you do in life, there is change, there is adventure, lessons to learn. May we always be grateful and happy, no matter what comes our way! Thats what I want to take from Antarctica 2011!

Day 1- Yoga Ski Retreat at the Alta Lodge!!

We had a great first day today. Last night we enjoyed a lovely dinner of Mahi Mahi and Roast Beef last night as we got to know the group consisting of Joe and Tracy from Connecticutt, Ron from Virginia, Mario from Montreal, Hillel from Arizona. Eric Gustufson and I are guiding and Rosie has set up the whole program! We did yoga in the morning in the Sitzmark bar, ski toured all day in Whitepine drainage, and yoga in the evening in the church. Life is good! It is dumping snow now, so the skiing should be amazing tomorrow!

La Grave, 2011

We have to make this a yearly pilgramage! This place is amazing. Very cool terrain, steep couliors, short hikes to long ski descents. It is an adventure for sure with crampons and ice ax as a part of the delay kit! You could say skiing here is addictive. We have been skiing with Brian Nestor at La Grave, La Meije and at Montgenevre. Yesterday at Montgenevre we descended into Italy for an amazing Italian lunch! Brian's son Matt will arrive tonight driving from Spain. Tomorrow we will go on an overnight objective up an over La Grave to an unmanned hut making our way back around the next day to ski a sweet line back into La Grave.

Tips for skiing in the Backcountry in the Spring!

1. Waterproof your skins!

Once the skins get wet, it's over. The snow sticks to the skins and you end up trying to haul an extra 10 lbs. on your feet! It could put an end to your ski touring day. You can use Nikwax Ski Skin Proof that is applied and needs to dry over night, or a rub on product, Black Diamond Ascension Glop Stopper Skin Wax. I keep a bar of this in my pack when touring. It is best to use it before going out! It doesn't work so well if the skins are already wet.

2. Wax your skis!

When using skins everyday, the glue tends to dry out the skis. In the spring with wet snow if your skis are dry, the snow can glop on your skis too! I carry some rub on liquid glide wax that can be applied in the field and works well.

3. Go early!

Things warm up fast in the spring, so get out early. For corn skiing, you can follow the sun starting with east facing slopes in the morning, move south, then west in the afternoon! Make sure you get off the slopes when they get too warm. Look for roller balls to indicate when it is getting too warm. To find the powder stash you will have to go high and ski direct north facing.

A trail that was safe in the morning, may not be safe in the afternoon!

4. Sunscreen

Trust me, you will need to reapply every few hours! The sun reflects off the snow 4 times as intense as direct sunlight!

After 5 days of grusome hiking through the jungles of Papua New Guinea, Todd and crew have reach the summit of Carstensz Pyramid. They left at 2AM in the morning and climbed for 7 hrs with some deep trail breakign through snow, and rock climbing all day. There were some fixed lines, and tryrolean traverse near the summit. Todd says hello to friends abnd family! He says it is so beautiful there!!! Congratulations to the group!!!!

Antarctica climbing! Mt. Vinson & Mt. Rossman!

[[posterous-content:pid___0]]We had a fun trip on Mt. Vinson. We waited out a storm spending 7 nights at High Camp, and then had a beautiful though cold and windy summit day! Everyone had really good attitudes and we learned a lot camping in those conditions. We build walls 6 ft. high for the Posh tent (dining tent), and built walls around the tents and the pee hole. We eestimate that we cut around 500 blocks. Nice work team.

Back at Union Glacier we climbed Mt. Rossman and I got in a few fun steep ski lines.

We have had a beautiful fall here in the Wasatch. I feel grateful to witness the transformation of seasons here filled with brilliant colors that uplift the soul. We went from summer like climbing that was hot in the sun with green fauna up and down the canyon, to vibrant fall colors and wind within days. The colors popped brighter each day before our eyes, and now these reds and yellows are blanketed with a pure white snow! Things happen fast around here. I am glad to be witness to it all! Hope you enjoy seeing a glimpse of this process in these photos! I am going to take the bright memory of this fall to Antarctica in a week where the terrain is a bit less colorful, but none the less exciting with peaks that protrude high above expansive ice fields.

Wind River Range! Cirque of Towers!

[[posterous-content:pid___0]]We hiked in and set up camp early on September 2nd and the weather was so nice we were able to go climb the south buttress of Pingora peak including the beautiful K crack 5.8 that can be by passed 5.6. We were glad we didn't pass it up, as it was a really fun crack! The afternoon views are amazing from here. One side drops off steeply and stares directly at the East ridge of Wolf's Head our objective for day two.

As fall is approaching the days are a bit shorter, and the temperatures a little cool. We got up at 6am the next day and headed up around 7am to Wolf's Head. We did the grassy ledges approach. Just as we were almost to the ridge, it snowed for about 10 seconds. We waited a bit to see what the clouds were going to do, and luckily were able to continue our climb.

On the narrow ridge we kept our eyes focused on our feet and not the steep drop to both sides! The climb traverses the ridge sometimes to the north and other times to the south. It is about 10 pitches of airy 5.6 climbing that takes some grace to stay connected to this peak. The climbing is exposed but mostly easy! There were a few spots that made your think carefully about your next move. The north side had snow and ice on some of the ledges. We had a blast! The weather threatened but held for us, and we stayed dry and happy.

Day 3 we ventured up to the Overhanging tower which was easy and fun climbing. We managed to find a few cracks that were more challenging along the way to test our skills. We rapped toward Sharks nose to climb it as well, but threatening dark clouds made us think twice. Instead we circled back around the west side of Overhanging tower, found another fun ridge to climb, and headed up and over to the Cirque again. One challenging move required a big step across and open gap to top out on a large boulder! Not as hard as it looked. Breathtaking none the less!

In the 4 days we were in their fall came swooping in with lots of wind, changing colors in the tundra, and cooler temperatures reaching below freezing at night. I think we saw one mosquito the whole time!

Grant is a natural and picked up the climbing skills quickly! We had a blast, and did a little yoga too! I have to say this is one of my favorite places in the world! Hope to climb with you there next year!

We had a fabulous trip into the Winds last week. There are abundant wildflowers, rivers, lakes and peaks to sooth the soul! We enjoyed climbing Pingora and Overhanging tower up in the Cirque of Towers! Fishing in lonesome lake was beautiful too! Chris did an amazing job coming in with great fitness and little rock experience he rallied on the Grand Teton and in the Winds. Clyde Reavley, my 18 yr old nephew, portered for us. He was amazing, super strong, helpful and fun to have along! If you are interested in a journey into a wild, remote, awe-inspiring mountain range with wonderful granite towers calling your name, sign up soon! I can take 3 more people, and have Todd guide as well! It will surely be an adventure of a lifetime!

I am on a 10 day trip with Chris right now and things are going well! We had a great trip on the Grand! The wildflowers are ever blooming, and a sense of peace abounds in these mountains around here! We climbed the Exum ridge, and enjoyed great climbing and a nice sunrise too! I saw some Buffalo on the way home in the park. We are heading into the Wind River Range tomorrow to climb in the Cirque of Towers, fish in the high mountain ponds, and do yoga on the rocks!

Denali's West Buttress

We have successfully completed our second Denali expedition of the season. Todd Passey led this custom private climb of Denali's West Buttress assisted by Joey McBrayer, Lillian and Adam completed the team. We had a couple weather delays flying on and then battled some rough weather down low, but had great weather on the upper mountain. Our summit day was beautiful, even realitively warm.

Here are some photos of the hike into Carstensz Pyramid (Puncak Jaya), the highest peak on the Oceanic continent making it one of the seven summits. It is located in the Papua Province in Indonesia. At 16,024ft. it is the highest peak between the Himalayas and the Andes. This peak requires rock climbing skills and offers a unique cultural experience.

Though it rained a lot this weekend we still managed to have a great time! We enjoyed smores around the campfire, climbed a bit on wet rock, learned some skills, and finally got in a long pitch with a little sunshine! Not to mention pizza night at the best little pizza joint we have ever been too! We learned from the place mats how to change our car brakes, and we had all the topping you want on your pizza with no extra charge.

Come enjoy the "greatest snow on earth" skiing and yoga adventure in the beautiful

Wasatch mountains. This program combines yoga instruction with both resort and

backcountry ski outings. We use the principles of alignment and self awareness taught

Requirements:

Guide Bio:

Winslow Passey is an AMGA certified Ski Mountaineering Guide.

She has been guiding for 9 years, and is a lead guide for Utah

Mountain Adventures. Winslow has guided all over the world in

Antarctica, Nepal, Mongolia, South America, Alaska, and in the

Northwest.

Winslow successfully completed an intensive one month long

Satpa Yoga Teacher Training Course (200 hours theory and practice)

under the direct supervision of the renown yogi Dr. Sushil

Bhattacharya, founder/director of Sapta Yoga International,

Kathmandu, Nepal.

Winslow has been sharing yoga with others in the mountains for

years while guiding on Denali in Alaska and in the Himalayas

traveling to Everest Base Camp and Island Peak.

All inclusive package includes:

• 4 nights lodging at the Alta Lodge

• Full hot breakfasts and four-course dinners, lunch on the mountain

at Alta one day, and 2 days sack lunch

Walker Spur, Grand Jorasses

The Walker Spur is a mixed rock and ice route on the north face of the Grand Jorasses.
We climbed this route in two teams of two. Our friends Tim Connelly and Dylan Taylor formed one team, and Winslow and Todd were the other team.
This is a long route, approx. 1200 meters of climbing. The descent is down the south side and is more than 2500 meters of down climbing, rappeling, glacier walking and trails
The picture below is of the north face of the Grand Jorasses. The Walker Spur is the prominent buttress in the left center.

More European Adventures

For our latest adventure we rented a car and drove south to the Dolimites of Italy. The Dolimites is a large area in the northern, German speaking, mountains of Italy. The rock climbing is endless and the landscape incredibly beautiful.
We camped out and cooked on a stove, which was a first here in Europe. We get a lot of this state side, but in Europe we have utilized the huts. It was fun to camp and dirt bag it again.
The Rock is all limestone, making some very beautiful formations and inspiring towers. The rock climbing is unique in a few ways. There is a "no bolt" ethic, so most of the protection is pitons. The climbing is very run out, often 20 to 30 feet between pro, and the pro that there is is often suspect. The routes are also very circuitus, following the path of least resistance. The path of least resistance on these limstone walls means lot's of traversing, making route finding difficult. I am maybe making climbing in the Dolimites sound not real fun, but that is not true. Climbing here is very fun and very adventurous. You absolutely must be on your game, falling is not an option here. So even the moderate climbs will keep you excited!

Mongolia 2009

I loved guiding in Mongolia this year with Dianette Wells, Tracy Murgatroyd, Lani Hicks, Lynn Jacobs, and Cathy Goodrow! We climbed Mt. Khuiten, 14,500ft. , the highest peak in Mongolia which is on the boarder on China. We also climbed Mt. on the boarder of Russia. We rode horses out, drove to the lakes in Western Mongolia and went horseback riding to the waterfalls. We also went rafting and rock climbing! Here are the photos!

Europe 2009

We have had a great vacation over here in the Alps. We climbed the Matterhorn, in Switzerland. It was a long rock ridge route that was super fun! It was interesting to see the mad rush of people climbing the ridge, and the delicate etiquette of how to pass other guided parties on the ridge.

We then spent a few days in Italy craging because it was raining/snowing in Alps. We stayed in a great hotel that was an old church, and ate good food.

Then we climbed Mt. Blanc from the Cosmiques hut going over Mt. Blanc de Tacul, Mt. Maudit, and then to the summit of Mt. Blanc. We made it up in 5.5 hrs. came down to the hut and then climbed the Cosmiques Arrete on the way back to the Auguille de Midi to catch the tram back down to Chamonix!

I have just returned from Alaska where I enjoyed working a 12 day course, an 8 day course, and a trip on Denali. It has been a great seaso up there. Check out the photos from the Yin and Yang Barkaloungers here. I am now enjoying being at home for a week in the Wasatch before heading to Mongolia on the 7th of July.

What has been happening lately!

Well since our last post a lot has happened around here. Winslow is still in Nepal. She finished her Everest base camp trek and Island peak climb, and is now doing a Yoga training at an asharum in Phokara, Nepal. She is doing well and enjoying the experience, but I will let her tell about both her trek/climb and her Yoga.

Meanwhile I have been between Salt Lake City, Seattle and Red Rocks. Since last year I have been training and preparing for my AMGA rock exam by rock climbing since Winslow left in early Oct. Then at the end of Oct. I participated in and passed my rock exam. This was very exciting for me, as I have now passed two of the three exams necessary for international certification. (check out my blog if you want to know more about AMGA and IFMGA certification process) Since the beginning of Nov. I have been back here in SLC doing house projects, climbing at the gym and here in the Wasatch mountains.

Washington Pass and Squamish!!! August 7-9th, 2008

After the Enchantments we headed to Washington pass with Sara and Chris. We hung out their for 3 days climbing and staying at our friend Mark's cabin in mazama. We climbed on the North Early Winter's Spire, the Minuteman, and a day on Goat Wall.

Next we headed up to Squamish for another fun week. Unfortunately I fractured my heel. Bummer! Nonetheless we enjoyed the climbing.

Now I am heading home to relax and recover before going to Nepal in October. Todd is stay on in the Cascades to work until mid September.
